Commissioning and M&V = Achieving and Sustaining the Designer's Intent


Just as every facility is unique and evolving, so too are the energy systems that support them.  When a new project is undertaken, there are often specific requirements or complex existing conditions that shape the design.  As the project changes hands from a concept designer to the engineer of record to the installing contractor to the programmer to a commissioning agent and finally back to the customer, it can be altered to the point where the initial design intent is indiscernible.  The result can be facility engineering and maintenance inheriting a flawed design or limited system that does not meet their needs.

Worthington Energy Innovations has a proven track record of taking an integrated approach to designing, supplying, installing, commissioning, and sustaining energy projects for over 40 years.  From initial feasibility through commissioning, concept designers ensure that projects achieve and sustain their initial design intent.

This session will also provide valuable insights on an integrated approach where post project M&V is a continuous re-commissioning process which sustains the design intent and avoids operational drift.

Rick Niese is a Mechanical Engineer for Worthington Energy Innovations with a background in energy, thermal systems and power generation. Along with the WEI design team, Rick develops engineered solutions for energy savings projects utilizing WEI’s technologies and specialized solutions.  Rick has implemented projects for multiple industrial manufacturing plants, as well as food/beverage manufacturers, healthcare facilities, and military bases.

In his role as a Concept Designer he studies the details of a customer’s energy profile to separate energy needed from energy purchased.  This analysis leads to identifying opportunities to reduce energy usage and improve process operations.  Integrated into the startup team for projects he has designed, Rick is responsible for seeing projects through from initial identification to final commissioning which ensures that the original design intent of the project is realized by the customer.  In addition, through WEI’s Monitor and Verification program, Rick continues to sustain and improve the operation for the years to follow.

Rick is a graduate of The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and has twelve years’ experience in the energy industry.
