Renewable Energy at 3M

Abstract

Energy management has been a key component of 3M’s sustainable manufacturing efforts for over 40 years. In 2015, corporate sustainability goals set a target to increase renewable energy use at 3M by 25% within a decade. The company executed projects to increase the renewable electricity content; including wind and solar projects (owned and leased) and signing Power Purchase Agreements given financial and technical viability. 3M also focused on increasing energy efficiency to reduce total energy demand. This allows renewables to be a greater share of 3M’s overall electrical sourcing. Within 3 years, the company was able to surpass their goal while supporting business growth.

In 2019, 3M joined the international initiative RE100 pledging to source electricity through 100% renewables by 2050, a large increase over the 2015 target. When addressing 3M’s global sites, there is a unique challenge in identifying an appropriate plan based on the geopolitical location. Likewise, subsidies and incentives differ by region and shape the decision-making process. As well, the internal business organization play a role in how renewable energy is incorporated in an area. Finally, 3M developed a Centrally Coordinated Fund to make capital available for energy efficiency and renewables projects to materialize their goals.

Andrew Hejnar is 3M Company’s Global Energy Manager with more than 15 years of experience in leading sustainability initiatives at 3M.  
Hejnar’s efforts on improving energy performance and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at 3M’s manufacturing facilities and commercial buildings across US, Canada and around the world enabled 3M to achieve the ISO 50001 Energy Management System Standard, increase energy efficiency and procure renewable energy.


Hejnar was recently named Energy Manager of the Year for 2018 and 2019 (Corporate) by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). In 2017, Hejnar was named one of Canada’s Clean 16 as an outstanding contributor to clean capitalism.


Hejnar holds a Master’s Degree in Energy Management, a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, and he is a Professional Engineer of Ontario, Certified Practitioner in Industrial Energy Management Systems and SEP Performance Verifier. He has also completed industry certificates including the Advanced Certificate in Facilities Management and Certified Energy Manager, Certified Energy Auditor, and has achieved Certified Carbon Reduction Manager accreditation.
